Kearney, Missouri endured a powerful storm on April 23, 2026, as an EF0 tornado with 85 mph winds touched down, leaving behind notable destruction.
The damage concentrated between 19th Street and State Route 92, where uprooted trees and scattered debris blocked roads and struck homes.
Despite the widespread damage, no injuries occurred, and by early Friday, local Public Works, Fire and Rescue, and Police teams had restored access across all affected routes.
Neighbors rallied together, with residents like Randy Brought clearing streets to guarantee emergency vehicles could pass during the immediate recovery.
Kearney Elementary School closed Friday after losing power, but utility crews restored electricity the same evening.
The city expanded hours at its Recycling and Compost Center, providing a vital resource for storm debris disposal.
Governor Mike Kehoe later requested federal aid for Clay County and others to help repair damage and support ongoing recovery.
