For Kearney, Missouri households considering dog adoption this week, official shelter resources in Liberty and Excelsior Springs offer two nearby starting points.

Liberty Animal Shelter directs prospective adopters from its Adopt a Pet page to individual Petfinder profiles.

Readers can review those profiles and use the online adoption application linked by the city.

A printable application is also available for people who prefer a paper form.

Check current availability and visit arrangements before making a trip.

A photograph alone cannot tell you whether a particular dog will fit your household.

Excelsior Springs Animal Control Center requires an appointment to adopt a pet.

Its official page links to a Facebook Adoptable Pets album and a dog adoption application.

Applicants must be at least 18 and complete an application.

The center says adoption fees cover spay or neuter surgery and vaccinations.

Shelter visiting hours and animal-control officer availability are listed separately, so confirm your appointment rather than assuming that an officer will be available for a walk-in visit.

Before committing, ask shelter staff about the dog’s known history, energy level and any recommended introductions to children or existing pets.

Consider your household’s daily routine and plans for ongoing care as part of the decision.

The reminder to confirm availability matters. I would rather wait for a good match than rush because a dog looks cute.

An online application is convenient, but I am glad Liberty still has a printable option too.

Is there a way to ask about a dog's fit with cats before arranging an appointment?

I would want to meet the dog before deciding. A nice photo does not tell you much about how much exercise it needs.

Glad the shelter links are together in one place. Checking the current listings first should save a wasted trip.
