Halloween Safety for Kearney Dogs: Before the Doorbell Rings |
Candy storage, a quiet space and identification checks for Halloween week |

Halloween week brings candy and visitors to Kearney homes, making a little preparation worthwhile for households with dogs.
As families plan for Friday’s downtown Halloween Blast and Saturday’s Halloween celebrations, include your dog’s needs in the household plan.
The ASPCA recommends putting chocolate and treats containing xylitol beyond pets’ reach.
Keep that rule in mind when children bring their candy home.

A quiet space away from arriving visitors can help dogs who find the activity stressful.
Familiar toys can give them something to do while the doorbell is busy.
Costumes are optional: skip them if your dog seems uncomfortable, and avoid anything that interferes with movement, vision, breathing or barking.
Watch for small pieces that could be chewed off, and keep pets away from candles and electrical wires.

Before an evening walk, check identification, use a secure leash and add reflective visibility.
If you suspect your dog has swallowed something toxic, contact your veterinarian promptly.
