Road resurfacing on Missouri Highway 33 is set to bring a new round of traffic changes for drivers traveling between U.S. Route 69 and Holt beginning Tuesday, October 6.

The work includes pavement resurfacing and accessibility improvements, with crews using a pilot car to move northbound and southbound traffic through the active work zone.

Drivers should expect temporary stops, slower travel, and Kearney traffic delays as the project progresses through Clay County.

Daytime pilot-car operations are scheduled from about 7 a.m. to 6 p.m. each day through late October, although the schedule remains weather dependent.

Once crews reach the Kearney city limits, the work is expected to shift to nighttime hours, generally from 7 p.m. to 6 a.m.

That change should reduce some daytime disruption inside Kearney, but evening and early-morning drivers may still encounter lane restrictions and changing traffic patterns.

MoDOT construction crews are asking motorists to slow down, stay alert, and be prepared to follow flaggers and the pilot vehicle through the work area.

The biggest practical change for local drivers is simple: build extra time into trips on Highway 33.

Because work zones can shift as paving advances, a route that moves normally one day may operate under temporary traffic control the next.

The Highway 33 Kearney corridor is an important north-south route for local commuters, school traffic, businesses, and residents traveling between Kearney and communities to the north.

Patience will matter as the resurfacing moves closer to town.

Drivers should watch for posted work-zone signs, leave additional following distance, and avoid distractions while passing through controlled traffic.

Weather could alter daily work plans, so motorists should expect conditions to change during the project.

Clay County always seems to do road work in the fall. Wish they would spread some of it into summer when school is out and traffic is lighter.

Took this road last week and hit a couple rough patches near the county line. Good timing on the resurfacing.

The pilot car thing always makes me nervous. People get impatient and try to pass. Please just be patient out there.

I’m glad they’re finally resurfacing that stretch, but the pilot car is going to make the morning drive interesting.

6pm cutoff is reasonable at least. I was worried they would be running operations into the evening rush too.

Good to know they’re switching to nights once they hit Kearney. Highway 33 can back up fast when traffic is stopped.

Accessibility improvements are a good thing at least. That area needed some work beyond just the pavement. Late October end date seems optimistic with Missouri weather being what it is.

I live right off 33 and the pavement was getting pretty bad in spots. This is overdue honestly.

Weather dependent schedules in October in Missouri. So basically expect the unexpected every morning.

Does anyone know if the Holt side or the 69 side is where the worst of it will be? Would help to know which end to avoid.

Accessibility improvements are a good addition. Not just repaving but actually making it safer for everyone.

My husband drives this every single day for work. Guess he will be leaving the house earlier starting Tuesday.

For folks coming from Holt side, County Road H adds a few minutes but it keeps you out of the mess entirely. Just a heads up.

Pilot car operations always take longer than they say. Plan for at least twice the delay.

7am start times are no joke for people with early commutes. Budget some extra time folks.

The stretch between 69 and Holt needed this for years. Glad they are finally doing it.

That pilot car setup is going to back things up something awful during morning commute hours. 7am start is no joke on that road.

Glad they are finally fixing that stretch. It has been rough for a while now. Just wish they picked a better time of year than harvest season.

Late October is going to be rough if we get early rain. Hope they can stay on schedule.

I guess we can take the back roads through Holt. Not ideal but beats sitting behind a pilot car for 20 minutes.
