Kearney families planning winter activities have until Sunday, November 15, to register for the Parks & Recreation youth basketball program, with a regular fee of $100 per player.

The official registration page lists the program period as November 30, 2026, through February 20, 2027, with coed divisions for first and second grades, third and fourth grades, and fifth and sixth grades.

Games are scheduled for Saturdays at Hawthorne Elementary School, beginning after the Kearney School District’s winter break.

That distinction matters for family calendars: the program’s November 30 start does not mean Saturday games begin that week.

Practices are tentatively expected in early December, depending on registration numbers, and will take place at various Kearney elementary schools.

Weekday practice times depend on gym and coach availability and may include Wednesdays, so families should not assume a particular evening before schedules are set.

Teams will be formed through random computer assignment and will be coed.

Each player may request one buddy, but both children must name each other during registration for that request to be honored.

Once teams are finalized, the program will not grant team transfers.

If snow cancels a Saturday game, a makeup game may need to take place during the week.

The City’s announcement also invites people interested in volunteer coaching to use its registration resources.
