Interesting Facts

Kearney, Missouri is a small city with a surprisingly outsized footprint on American history and culture — here are some details that tend to fly under the radar:

  • Jesse James's birthplace — and grave: The notorious outlaw was born in Kearney in 1847 and, after his assassination in 1882, was buried on the family farm there. His mother, Zerelda, reportedly charged visitors a fee to see the grave and sold pebbles from it as souvenirs — making her one of America's earliest true-crime entrepreneurs.
  • A town renamed for a general: Kearney was originally called Centerville before being renamed in 1868 to honor General Stephen W. Kearny — though the town's name dropped the second y in the general's surname, a quirk that has puzzled residents and historians ever since.
  • Part of the Jesse James Farm is still in private hands: The Clay County historical site preserves the original log cabin where James was born, but portions of the surrounding farmland remained in the James family for generations after his death, making it one of the longer-lasting outlaw family land-holdings in the Midwest.
  • Explosive Civil War geography: Kearney sits in Clay County, which was deeply divided during the Civil War, producing both fierce Union loyalists and pro-Confederate bushwhackers — the same turbulent environment that directly shaped Jesse James's radicalization as a young teenager riding with Quantrill's guerrillas.
